Historic Center of Paris: The Marais

Here is a slideshow of photos to the East of the apartment. It starts 15 minutes walk away at Place des Vosges, goes in a straight line along the amazing shopping street of rue des Francs-Bourgeois, a route that is full of many wonderful clothing and food shops.

To the East is Place de Vosges:

Less than 15 minutes away is this historic square. Built by Henri IV, his building code not only set the architectural theme, but also specified that each of the large houses had to be owned by a single family worthy of the royal square. That archaic law was still in effect up to the 1960s. The square was inaugurated in 1612 with a grand carrousel to celebrate the wedding of Louis XIII and Anne of Austria. Now days the arches have art galleries, restaurants and handbag/jewelry shops. It is well worth a visit although it can get crowded on a sunny afternoon.

The South, Notre-Dame and the Seine:

Within 15 minutes walk from the apartment you can easily get to the Rue de Rivoli with its major shops, and, when you walk over the Seine on the pretty Pont d'Arcole to the Île de la Cité you are right at Notre-Dame. Other places within 15 minutes include the Hôtel de Ville, which is the administration centre of Paris and an amazing building. They hold festivals and events in the large square, the Place de l'Hôtel de Ville, such as putting up huge screens for the tennis when Roland Garros is on.

Île de la Cité is one of two islands on the Seine in the center of Paris. It has the oldest bridge in Paris, the Pont Neuf. It was founded in medieval times, and the Place du Parvis Notre-Dame is traditionally thought of as zero when calculating distances within France. There are still three magnificent medieval buildings on the island: Notre Dame de Paris; The Conciergerie, the oldest royal palace in Paris converted into a prison in the 15th century and the Sainte Chapelle, located a stone's throw from Notre Dame, it was built in the second half of the 13th century by Louis IX and has amazing stained glass windows. Pont Saint-Louis is the bridge between Île de la Cité and the smaller Île Saint-Louis.

THe other island in the Seine is Île Saint-Louis, formerly used for the grazing of market cattle and stocking wood, it was developed during the 17th-century reigns of Henri IV and Louis XIII. Now it offers a peaceful oasis in the center of Paris with its narrow one-way streets, no métro station and only two bus stops, it is mostly residential, but there are several restaurants, shops, cafés and ice cream shops, one church, Saint-Louis-en-l'Île Church. Stroll there to enjoy an evening aperitif at the Brasserie de L'Isle Saint-Louis that overlooks Île de la Cité and sells the famous Île Saint-Louis ice cream: Berthillon.

The West, Centre Pompidou:

Five minutes away is Centre Georges Pompidou (known as the Pompidou Centre in English) is in the 4th arrondissement of Paris, near rue Montorgueil and the Marais. Its design is high-tech and was created by Italian architect Renzo Piano; the British architect Richard Rogers; and the Italian architect Gianfranco Franchini. The building itself is fascinating, wether you love it or hate it. It offer great views from the trendy Restaurant Georges, some of the finest panoramic of Paris anywhere in the city. The museum never seemes to be crowed as it has large, open rooms. It houses the Bibliothèque publique d'information, a vast public library, the Musée National d'Art Moderne which is the largest museum for modern art in Europe, and IRCAM, a centre for music and acoustic research.

The North, the oldest Auberge in Paris!

The Marais has many medieval streets, and on one just north west of the apartment is, what is said to be, the oldest Auberge (guest house) in Paris.
